When you live on an island, you learn that if you want something done, you'd better do it yourself. Waiting for builders, decorators, plumbers - for anyone with skills - to show up is not a matter of days. It's a matter of months. And in the case of renovating my house and the wee bothy at the top of the back garden, it's been three years and I'm only just now seeing the end in sight.

So when I needed steps down into the garden, I made them myself.

Ha! You can cook better than me. It's whatever you've got in the garden/supermarket produce display. The liquid is about 1 1/2 pints. The rest? 1 regular can of beans, cannellini if you can't get borlotti but black beans would be great plus whatever bunch size of chard or kale Whole Foods or Any Other sells. Big trick: make it the day before you want to eat it, though it's great Day One. And if you have any rinds from a Parmeggiano chunk lying about (never chuck them, freeze them till needed, like now) put it into the soup for extra depth of flavour...

Afraid not. But there's a thick fishing rope 'bannister' alongside to grip onto. And the steps aren't very deep.
